So the reason we were celebrating my birthday in Toledo, which was now on August 5th, was because Nisarga had so
me Hilton points left from his previous life which were enough for one night at the Hilton in Toledo. I have tried to think, have I ever stayed at a Hilton before? Nope, I don’t think I have. Nisarga on the other hand, in his previous incarnation as Eryk working for Avon in the UK, stayed there for over a month while they were trying to get him an apartment. So accrued points! And luckily for me, us, he still had enough left for one night in one of their nicer rooms with a queen bed; which he says was for me as I’m his queen but really I think it was s
o that for one night he could sleep on a bed that fit his entire body instead of hanging his feet off the edge as usual. The room was luxurious, that’s for sure! We spent time at their pool, which is what he wanted desperately; another real reason why we were there!
We walked around Toledo and we fell in love with it. The old town of Toledo is a UNESCO world heritage site. Small winding streets with houses and doors and balconies full of character. Plazas, churches, synagogues, parks, patios, balconies, they were all lovely and in abundance! We just walked and walked and got lost in this maze, and all of the sudden we were at the edge of the old city, on
a hill, and the sun was setting. And it was spectacular! We had not seen the sun set in weeks and it was perfect, perfect, perfect! We got marzipan, which Toledo is known for, and that served as my birthday cake. On our way out of the old town we found ourselves passing a small church with some
tables set up outside, each with a little candle, and Nisarga fell in love with it. So we had dinner there, choosing from the fixed price menu, which included a bottle of wine. We had a bottle in the fridge which Jose had given us, waiting for us for this special occasion. But by the time this red was done with us, we were in the hotel room. This is to say we couldn’t finish the bottle there, so we took what was left and finished it back in the room! I love Spain. In between the journey home however, we stopped at the Hilton’s outside restaurant for a peak. And Nisarga spotted these white canopy bed-like sofa lounge things, which have no top, and again he fell in love. So we laid there, looking at the stars, me falling asleep some I must admit, enjoying the delicate evening breeze.
The next day we spent more time at the pool before leaving, soaking up not just the rays and the refreshing effects of the water, but also our last moments of living the high life (materially speaking) for some time. Thank you Hilton, Avon, and Eryk. Afterwards we picked up our “homes” (our backpacks, which are like turtle shells for us in function and size: they are our home and they are almost bigger then us) and got back on the bus to Madrid so we could catch a bus to Cordoba. And so our journey continues…
